Shuptrine’s Gold Leaf Designs is extremely proud to represent local glass artist Kerrick Johnson. Dedicated to the highest level of craftsmanship, Johnson is a sculptor in the most traditional sense, creating one-of-a-kind glass sculptures through his unique methods of cutting, grinding, and polishing glass. Choosing bright, vibrant colors as his palette, he blows glass into aqueous, linear forms encased in clear glass then, working in the cold working process, carves unique patterns into each sculpture, such as grooves, ribbons and sunbursts. Each piece is cradled in a custom stainless steel stand.
“I make work to represent exactly what glass is. The transparency of glass requires the creator to pay homage equally to the interior quality as well as the surface quality,” says Johnson.
The glass pieces showcased in the gallery are part of Johnson’s Halcyon Series. The Halcyon Series brings out the true qualities of glass. The clear exterior is diamond ground and hand polished to create the interactive optics unique to glass. Each piece is created as a unique one-of-a-kind sculpture that is brought to life by the grinding and polishing techniques. As the viewer explores the surface of the piece, it changes to give the viewer a unique aesthetic. No two view points are the same.
